Updated narrative planning

The narrative plan has been updated in order to fit the new film.

Todorov's theory of equilibrium is use in our film as the film begins with a young woman making a cup of tea in the kitchen ready to sit down and watch some T.V. . As the girl is making the tea in the background of the shot you see a mysterious figure appear at the window in the door. As the girl walks to the living room ready to sit down the figure appears again but, the girl does not see him. The girl is sitting with her boyfriend in the living room of the house when a new report about killer clowns appears on the T.V. . They watch for a few seconds before switching the television off and going to bed however, the couple forget to lock the door behind them and the door is slightly open. As the couple walk upstairs the figure at the door and opens it. The figure is revealed to be a clown and the clown walks up the stairs following the couple who had went before him.

Rough cut of 'Smile'

Some aspects of the film will need to be changed in order to make the film look more like an opening rather than a trailer. In order to do this we will need to cut down on the amount we reveal in our stories and reveal more about the characters in the film. Also, we need to add more suspense and therefore as a group we have decided to make the clown circle the house and pop up at different windows in order to scare the viewer and leave them apprehensive that the protagonists have not spotted the antagonist.

Props and make up for main brief

Baseball bat

Baseball bat- The baseball bat will be in the hands of the clown who will use the object to break into the house and also kill the actors in the film at the end of the opening scene. The baseball bat will be an integral piece of iconography ,for the clown, which will be closely associated with the character.

Props list

Jade was assigned the role of making a props and costume list for the day of filming which will be seen on screen. We decided on the use of a black hoodie/tracksuit for the clown in order to make them appear like they are in their youth and also show that the clown is a real person who has a mental problem leading them to think they are a clown. The gloves also belong to the clown as this means that the fingerprints of the clown are not going to be detected and therefore they cannot be caught. The lounge wear belongs to extras who are the dead bodies in order to make it appear that they were just round a friends house for the day.

We decided to use make up in order to make our clown in our film in order to make the film more unique and also show the human side of the character so that we know that the person is just mentally fragile- which will make the film more scary as we can actually see people becoming like this in real life.

Main brief character analysis

Image result for evil clown
Image result for black tracksuit
Clown- As a group we decided that the use of clowns in our film would be a good link to the context of clown sightings in the news. Our clown would not have any speaking lines and would appear evil, due to the mask they are wearing. This means that the audience are more scared as they can visibly see that the clown is evil rather than just viewing a normal children party clown. The clown would be wearing everyday causal clothing in order to make them seem like they are a normal person who has gone mentally insane. The clothing of the clown would be black so that the clown had connotations of mystery and unkown characteristics due to them not talking.

Extras (dead bodies)- The dead bodies are going to be a group of friends who have gathered at their friends house and are killed by the clown. The dead bodies will be a mixture of males and females in order to use traditional gender stereotypes (especially ones found in horror films)later on in the film.

Recce for main brief

Recce- For our main brief we decided to use a house as this connotes safety and closure. However, we can break this traditional stereotype as the clown has been able to get into the house and therefore the audience will panic as they could see this happening to them and realise how easy it is to break into a house. Also the house would be an easy location to adjust lighting and create the best shot. The door way will be used in order to show a long shot of the clown breaking into the house and the narrow path will make the audience feel like there will be no escape for the people in the house. The living room will be used to display the range of dead bodies on the floor ,as well as highlighting the intrusion the clown has had on the live's of the people as they have been able to get into their personal space.

Main brief 'Smile' script and screenplay

Smile script

Characters:
Luke Scrivener- Killer clown
News reporter (voice only)- Joe Deighton

(Starts out with Breaking news reports, clown outbreak across the UK. Archive footage appears with a Breaking News overlay.)
News reporter: Breaking news! There has been killer clown outbreak across the UK. Reports from London to Glasgow have come out of clown sightings in local parks, alleys and some even going so far to break into houses. Petrified civilians have called the police but to no prevail. Out of a reported 156 clown sightings, 15 have been arrested and seven charged. The police have urged civilians to stay out no later than 9:00pm for the time being, until the craze is over however this leaves the question on everyone’s mind. When will this end?

(The newsreport stops and the diegetic sound of footsteps starts. Cuts to a clown breaking into a house faint use of soundtrack in the background [eerie tone]. The clown takes a few seconds to walk up to the door. The clown is holding a baseball bat.The clown hits the door with the baseball bat and the diegetic sound of the hitting can be heard along with a faint chuckle from the Clown. The clown walks into the house and switches off the light switch. Screams in the background as a black screen appears for 8 seconds. As the lights come back on, a jump cut is used to show the clown standing over a pile of ‘smiling’ dead bodies. The soundtrack has become louder. The institution logo appears on screen and the word ‘presents’ appears on screen. The screen fades to black and the film logo ‘Smile appears on screen’)

Group roles allocation

The next step in planning that the group undertook was to divise the group into their roles which they were going to focus on. As a group we; made the narrative plan, will decide which aspects of the film need to be reshot in order to create a good film and a sense of continuity. Joe took the roles of; creating the storyboard with some assistance from me (Callum), creation of screenplay and script and during post production will help myself to edit the film. Jade was given the roles of; making a list of props and costumes to be used, create the location recce and also keep the production schedule up to date and make sure everything is done on time. Harriett has the roles of; making the character breakdown with analysis and why they fit the roles and helping to keep the production schedule well as well as choosing the sound which will be used in the film. Finally, I had the roles of; screenplay and script writing in order to make actors know what they are doing and editing the film in post production in order to make sure any unwanted parts are disused.

Narrative planning

For our narrative planning the group decided on a final idea based upon clowns (which had to be changed due to the outbreak of clown incidents from our initial idea). Due to the recent events, we decided that filming outside could cause harm to the public and maybe the actors. Therefore we decided that if we used archive footage and then added our own scene of a clown breaking into a house we would decrease the potential for danger or conflict. On the sheet we have recorded that the audtitions for actors are still ongoing and will be recorded and concluded on the blog at a later date. We have two potential candidates who will be interview and auditoned in order to see who is sufficient for the role.

Main brief initial ideas

For our main brief we decided to create a mind map in order to incorporate the groups individual ideas into one group idea. Due to the recent events of clown pranks, we decided that we could use archive footage with an overlay of the news report. We decided that after the archive footage we could create a fake clip of our own of a clown breaking into a house which leads to the killing of a family.

Google form responses

From our Google form responses we are able to see that the main target audience that we should base our films towards is males who are aged between 15-18. This is because they are the mode of the the responses, however due to some females answering the survey we can also target the females as they also take an interest in horror films. Our idea of basing the horror film around a clown evidently would work well as 71.4% of people voted that they would find a psychological horror including a clown scary. This may be due to the recent events involving clowns thus meaning that people are becoming more scared of clowns as it is s realistic scenario. Furthermore, the genre that was highlighted as the most popular was psychological- this means that would be able to use good intense music and lighting in order to make the narrative appear more scary as these different aspects of peoples brain. As well as the psychological genre, the slasher genre also gained some votes so the group can decide whether they want to include some elements of the slasher genre, such as a serial killer or bladed tools.

Pitch question and answer session

After our pitch we had a question and answer session using an element of google slides which allowed people to ask questions as we were presenting our pitch.

If your demographic age group is 15-18 your cutting out the 19-25 year old's, wouldn't you rather have a wider age range to attract more people ?

Even though the demographic for the film is 15-18 this is just used in order to focus on the age certificate that we want to use. This was done as it means that we don't have to add any visual gore to the scene. This would not cut out the potential sales to the 19-25 age bracket as we are not banning them from watching the film In synergy to produce or to distribute the film? Due to Miramax being able to produce and distribute we would be able to do both with this company in synergy. If we produced and distributed with them then this would mean that the company has a better understanding of how to advertise the film. This sounds like a scene from a film maybe half way through, how are you going to make it clear it is an opening? In order to make it appear more like an opening we could make it appear like the girl is waking up from a dream and could walk into the bathroom to wash her face whilst a red balloon floats behind her.
